Bing Maps
(formerly Virtual Earth) from Microsoft. 2D and 3D aerial map images.
Google Earth
lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, from galaxies in outer space to the canyons of the ocean. You can explore rich geographical content, save your toured places, and share with others.
Terrafly
Aerial photo imagery derived from USGS Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles (DOQs). Imagery has been orthorectified, i.e. altered for precise mapping. Aerial photo imagery is available over almost any area of your choice within the continental United States at 1-meter resolution or better (at 1-meter resolution 1meter=1pixel). Some urban area a available at 1-foot and better resolutions.
Flash Earth
An experimental application for viewing satellite and aerial imagery of the Earth from multiple mapping websites inside a single Flash-based interface. It is not designed to be a fully-fledged mapping application but more for enjoying and exploring images of our planet.
MODIS
(or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is a key instrument aboard the Terra (EOS AM) and Aqua (EOS PM) satellites. Terra's orbit around the Earth is timed so that it passes from north to south across the equator in the morning, while Aqua passes south to north over the equator in the afternoon. Terra MODIS and Aqua MODIS are viewing the entire Earth's surface every 1 to 2 days, acquiring data in 36 spectral bands, or groups of wavelengths (see MODIS Technical Specifications). These data will improve our understanding of global dynamics and processes occurring on the land, in the oceans, and in the lower atmosphere. MODIS is playing a vital role in the development of validated, global, interactive Earth system models able to predict global change accurately enough to assist policy makers in making sound decisions concerning the protection of our environment.
Visible Earth
Created by NASA, this site is a directory of high resolution photos taken by satellite of every aspect of the Earth. From pictures of places to atmospheric phenomena, currents, temperatures.
Terraserver USA
Exploring our planet by studying maps and images is a fascinating experience! Not surprisingly, the first place many people visit is their own neighborhood. You also might want to take a look at famous places such as our National Parks or your favorite sports parks. TerraServer is also a valuable resource for researchers who was to study geography, environmental issues or archeological mysteries...there are almost limitless possibilities.
Digital Orthophoto Quadrangle GeoTiff (DOQQ)
Orthophotos combine the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. The primary digital orthophotoquad (DOQ) is a 1-meter ground resolution, quarter-quadrangle (3.75-minutes of latitude by 3.75-minutes of longitude) image cast on the Universal Transverse Mercator Projection (UTM) on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). DOQ's serve a variety of purposes, from interim maps to field references for earth science investigations and analysis. The DOQ is useful as a layer of a geographic information system and as a tool for revision of digital line graphs and topographic maps.
California Landsat Images
This product was created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and contains Landsat data files in Geographic Tagged Image-File Format (GeoTIFF). The Landsat 1, 2, and 3 satellites carried the multispectral scanner (MSS) sensors; the Landsat 4 and 5 satellites carries both the MSS and the thematic mapper (TM) sensors; and the Landsat-7 satellite carries the enhanced thematic mapper plus (ETM+) sensor. All three sensors are a part of an ongoing mission to provide quality remote sensing data in support of research and applications activities. This collection contains Landsat images for the State of California, as part of the CalView project. The images have all been reprojected to the California Albers Projection, NAD 83 datum, and provided in GeoTiff format.
