John Hopkins Online Certificate in Geographic Information Systems

Study GIS ONLINE with the flexibility of Johns Hopkins Graduate GIS Certificate Program.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) represent a technological breakthrough in organizing and displaying spatial information that promotes better decision-making by scientists, public officials, and communities facing increasingly complex demands upon their available resources.

Industries and government agencies routinely use GIS as a critical tool in representing and analyzing spatial data. Due to the demand for spatial information, GIS has become a dynamic field with a vast expanse of applications. Whether you are well-versed in computer technology or looking to enter this dynamic field, the Johns Hopkins Online Graduate Certificate in GIS is a great way to start a fascinating journey.

Applications of GIS continue to emerge across distinct fields and industries. A sampling of projects and research areas using GIS include:

  • Agricultural Science
  • Coastal Zone Management
  • Environmental Health
  • Health Care
  • Homeland Security
  • Law Enforcement
  • Natural Resource Management
  • Public Policy
  • Remote Sensing
  • Transportation
  • Urban Planning
  • Watershed Management

Jobs in GIS and Remote Sensing

As the market demand for spatial data and the systems to represent them continue to expand into new industries and government agencies, employers' need for GIS-specific skills continue to accelerate.

Johns Hopkins' Online Certificate Program in GIS is a graduate program providing a strong foundational education that delves into the principles and real-world applications of GIS. Students explore the principle tenets of GIS by completing five (5) subject area courses that build their credentials and capitalize on a marketplace hungry for skilled employees. The entire program is ONLINE. There are no residency requirements for students wishing to obtain a strong foundation in GIS from one of the premier academic research institutions in the country.

The courses within the Online Certificate in GIS focus our students to the following:

  • To become well-versed in GIS theory
  • To become knowledgeable in designing and managing spatial databases
  • To become versed in building and using spatial data models
  • To become prescient in spatial decision-making

The Certificate is designed for students with little or no experience in GIS. Relationship to MS in Environmental Sciences and Policy

The GIS program is a stand alone certificate. Students are not required to be enrolled in the M.S. in Environmental Sciences and Policy. However, any 2 of the 5 GIS certificate courses can count toward elective requirements in the M.S. degree program. Students in the GIS Certificate progam can likewise apply 2 of the GIS courses to the M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy program if they wish to pursue this degree upon completion of the GIS Certificate. Students who wish to purse both the M.S. degree and the GIS Certificate need to complete either the degree program or the GIS Certificate before they can be considered for matriculation in a second program.
