City University London giCentre - Department of Information Science
The giCentre is one of the largest UK research groups focussing on mapping, analysing and visualizing information with a geographic component.
We comprise around 15 staff and Ph.D. students and develop theory, solve problems and design solutions in geographic information (GI) science in partnership with government, industry and research organisations. We teach a range of courses based on our expertise and we disseminate our work through scientific publication, the media and by speaking at industry events.
Understanding and utilising GI effectively is fundamental to decisions wherever geography is important, for example, in navigation, the prediction of natural hazards, planning transportation options or analysing crime patterns. The giCentre takes its expertise in the theory, practice and technology of GI and applies it to real problems. Our partners include organisations such as Willis Re-insurance, eCourier, go2 Directory Systems, News International, the RNLI and local authorities. We are members of key international partnerships including the Willis Research Network, the Location and Timing Knowledge Transfer Network and the VisMaster Consortium.
Location-Based Services Research (LBSR) operates within the giCentre with a focus on this rapidly developing field in partnership with organisations such as the Ordnance Survey, Mobile Commerce and the GeoInformation Group.
We include among our visiting staff the Director of the Office for Public Sector Information Carol Tullo, and the Chair of the UK Advisory Panel on Public Sector Information David Rhind FRS, FBA, who are both leading players in geographic information policy development. Our research is disseminated through publication, conferences and MasterClasses, and through exploitation by our spinoff companies, including Camineo SAS and Placr Ltd.
Sponsors
We are a vibrant community of researchers with international expertise, global connections and excellent resources. We welcome partnerships with organisations seeking innovation, individuals looking for high quality Masters or PhD level training in GI and international researchers such as Leverhulme Fellows and visiting academics undertaking sabbatical study.
