Sharpton promises to fight Whitman's EPA nomination
Associated Press
NEW YORK - Decrying her as the "queen of racial profiling," the Rev. Al Sharpton
promised yesterday to lead the fight against New Jersey Gov. Christie Todd
Whitman's appointment as head of the Environmental Protection Agency.
"She is not symbolic of a governor who reaches out," Sharpton said in Harlem.
"She has a cloud of racism over her. . . .There's a warning signal sent by this
nomination, and we intend to fight it."
Sharpton's specific complaint was that Whitman failed to show sufficient concern
about the targeting of black motorists on the New Jersey Turnpike
"If Gov. Whitman could not recognize racial profiling on the highways of New
Jersey, why should we think she can recognize racism in environmental issues?"
Sharpton asked. "They are more subtle and complex."

Sharpton was referring to the issue of "environmental racism" - putting unwanted
facilities such as sewage plants, bus depots and garbage transfer stations in
minority or poor neighborhoods.
Whitman has already been nagged by continuing allegations that New Jersey
State Police officers targeted minority motorists for traffic stops and vehicle
searches.
Last year, there was further consternation with the release of a 1996 picture
showing Whitman frisking a black youth in Camden.

Sharpton said he had already contacted some other African-American leaders
about his opposition to Whitman, and promised to send all 100 U.S. senators a
New Year's card: Whitman's frisking photo.
The Senate needs to approve her nomination.
"The main focal point of racial profiling was in New Jersey," Sharpton said. "To
ignore it is absurd."
