Orbit Geospatial Technologies Free EOS Lite GIS Server
Management Summary
EOS is the scalable, extenable Orbit Server system, used for corporate and internet GIS data sharing. EOS supports most popular data formats, and can be extended with functionalities such as geoprocessing or gis-data related database access and transaction control.
EOS comes in 3 editions : a free EOS Lite, EOS Provider for data consultancy, and EOS Interactive for full corporate wide data editing.
EOS runs on most platforms and is very easy to maintian, as the remote EOS Console is free and included.
Technical Summary
EOS is a 100% clean java application that (preferrably) runs as a service on your server machine. Maintenance is minimal since the EOS Console allows remote configuration and monitoring. EOS does not require a Java Server (J2EE).
EOS supports most poular storage formats, both imagery and vector, and can connect to databases through standard JDBC or ODBC connectivity when required. Format suport can be extended by implementing the Resource Driver API.
Extensions can be developed using the vast API's that allow access to the core of the system, including all details of each object managed by the EOS container. Heaviliy used EOS servers can be configured as a pool of servers.
EOS provides the GIS data as they are defined. Structural and descriptional issues require Orbit GIS to manage, to be declared to EOS when ready.
Integration and Development Summary
The EOS API's (standard Orbit API's) allow integration with any environment, and dual-way communication with external applications, wether or not web- or service-based. Extensions are developed in Java, and can use all functionalities available in the Orbit Libraries. Geoprocessing operations and other can be defined as an 'operation' (such as Buffer or Query), declared to EOS and accessed by any Orbit Client such as Orbit GIS or Orbit FlashMap.
