For some of the most fascinating reading you'll find this year - or even this millennium - ... order this gem.
Midwest Book Review - May 2001
This amazing, candid, and documented compilation of essays ... is enthusiastically recommended reading.
Do you believe any of the following?
- Alcoholics Anonymous is effective.
- Hackers pose a grave threat to the nation.
- There's a hidden code in the Bible.
- The Big Bang is an airtight fact.
- Thousands of species have become extinct because of deforestation.
- Licking certain toads will get you high.
- Most terrorists are Middle Eastern.
Wake up! You're being lied to.
This book acts as a battering ram against the distortions, myths and outright lies that have been shoved down our throats by the government, the media, corporations, organized religion, the scientific establishment and others who want to keep the truth from us. An unprecedented group of researchers--investigative reporters, political dissidents, academics, media watchdogs, scientist-philosophers, social critics, and rogue scholars--paints a picture of a world where crucial stories are ignored or actively suppressed and the official version of events has more holes in it than Swiss cheese. A world where real dangers are downplayed and nonexistent dangers are trumpeted. In short, a world where you are being lied to.
Among the revelations inside:
- Noam Chomsky on news as propaganda and media as big business
- Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Sydney Schanberg on John McCain's efforts to conceal information on POW/MIAs
- Howard Bloom on liars in the media
- Riane Eisler on the realities of human nature
- James Ridgeway on tainted blood and more
- Jim Marrs on missing evidence in important cases
- Greenpeace cofounder Patrick Moore on environmental myths
- Michael Parenti on 'atrocities' in Kosovo
- Douglas Rushkoff on 'the information arms race'
- Gary Webb on the gutless corporate media
- Howard Zinn on Columbus
You'll also discover that a human being has already been cloned; Joseph McCarthy was not paranoid; museums refuse to display artifacts that conflict with the theory of evolution; the CIA has admitted to involvement in the drug trade; parents don't affect who their children become; plus further revelations involving Columbine, WWII, textbooks, Al Gore, George W. Bush, Timothy Leary and much more.
Dispensing with speculation and theorizing, You Are Being Lied To cuts right to the bone with fact after substantiated fact. Think we're being told the truth? We're not ... and this book proves it.
From the Publisher
This is the first in a planned series of Disinformation Guides. We chose Russ Kick as the editor of Disinformation Books because he is without doubt the best qualified candidate for the job. Once you see this book, we're sure you will agree with us that we made the right choice. The book contains 68 essays by 60 authors, is 400 pages long and measures 9"x12" - and its absolutely jammed with revelation after substantiated revelation.
Russ has assembled a literally unprecedented line-up of investigative reporters, activists, academics, parapolitical researchers, media watchdogs, scientist-philosophers, social critics, and rogue scholars. Many are very well-known: Howard Bloom, Noam Chomsky, Riane Eisler, Jim Marrs, Michael Parenti, James Ridgeway, Douglas Rushkoff, Gary Webb, Howard Zinn, and Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Sydney Schanberg.
Other contributors are very well-known within their fields, which include parapolitics, media criticism, drugs, radical science, sociology, environmentalism, sex radicalism, and hidden history.
In case you are not aware of the Disinformation brand, this is the "About Disinformation" text that appears at the front of the book:
Disinformation is more than it seems. Literally. From early beginnings almost a decade ago as an idea for an alternative Sixty Minutes-type TV news show to the book that you are now holding, Richard Metzger and Gary Baddeley have taken a dictionary term and given it secondary meaning to a wide audience of hipsters, thinkers, anti-establishmentarians and the merely curious.
The Disinformation Web site went live on September 13, 1996 to immediate applause from the very same news media that it was criticizing as being under the influence of both government and big business. The honeymoon was short Ė some three weeks after launch the CEO of the large US media company funding the site discovered it and immediately ordered it closed down. Needless to say, Metzger and a few loyal members of his team managed to keep the site going and today it is the largest and most popular alternative news and underground culture destination on the Web, having won just about every award thatís ever been dreamed up.
Disinformation is also a TV series, initially broadcast on the UKís Channel 4, a music imprint in the US in a joint venture with Sony Musicís Loud Records, and a huge counterculture conference, the first of which was held shortly after the turn of the Millennium in 2000. By the time this book rests in your hands Disinformation will probably have manifested itself in other media too. Based in New York City, The Disinformation Company Ltd. is a vibrant media company that Baddeley and Metzger continue to helm. They continue to look for the strangest, freakiest and most disturbing news and phenomena in order to balance the homogenized, sanitized and policed fare that is found in the traditional media.
About the Author
Russ Kick began his non-mainstream writing career in 1991 by doing book reviews for the legendary zine Factsheet Five, as well as Gauntlet, the only magazine exclusively devoted to freedom of expression issues. He still contributes reviews or articles--plus his column, "NetSpeech"--to every issue of Gauntlet.
Russ has written two books--Outposts [Carroll & Graf] and Psychotropedia [Critical Vision]. Both are huge guides to nonmainstream books and ideas. Outposts was called "the Whole Earth Catalog of alternative thought" by Reuters, "The Whole Earth Catalog with balls" by the disability magazine Mouth, and "eclectic, well-written, and expansive" by Details. The latter article also referred to Russ as "a radically tolerant Renaissance man" and concluded with this statement: "The decentralization of power and authority we see in government, on the Internet, and in our communities is rapidly happening in publishing, too. Guys like Russ Kick...will not only help us navigate the chaos, but will remind us that getting your mind regularly blown is a healthy and liberating act."
Psychotropedia earned unanimous praise from all over the alternative media, being hailed as a "grand grimoire of the underground press", "a fabulous 'must-own' for freethinkers", a "fabulous bible of counter-culture", "fascinating, all-encompassing", an "invaluable reference", an "encyclopaedia of forbidden thought, the underground, and extremism", and "an invaluable source for everything the mythical, but omnipresent 'they' don't want you to know about or get hold of".
Russ has also edited a well-received collection of erotica--Hot Off the Net: Erotica and Other Sex Writings from the Internet [Black Books]--and he regularly writes articles for the Village Voice, in addition to penning their newest column, "Net-o-matic". Of course, it shouldn't be overlooked that he is also the resident book reviewer for Disinformation, and that he has written dossiers for the site, as well.

As a student taking AP Biology, I spent half a year studying evolution. It was emphasized so much that I gave my teacher a drawing that said 'Evolution' for New Year. Me and my friend were tied for first place in that class, and I was rather sure about what I learned about evolution, if not other things that I knew to be lies - after all, Darwin and Wallace's theory seems so logical.
A week ago, I saw _You_are_Being_Lied_to_ in a bookstore. I was somewhat familiar with disinfo.com and I picked it up. What I read in a short article shocked me. If even the evolution theory had been disproven, what other lies am I learning? I don't know what to believe about the origin of life on Earth, but I'd rather know the truth, even if it turns my worldview upside down.
So far, the book is very good. The edition is beautiful, and is well worth the money. I know that as soon as I finish reading this volume, I'll be looking forward to the next one.

Stellar Guide to Escaping the 21st Century Consensus Trance, April 11, 2001
Reviewer: Alex Burns (see more about me) from Melbourne, Australia
Spearheaded by editor Russ Kick, this massive volume skewers the most "sacred cows" since Adam Parfrey foresaw the Apocalypse Culture. Whatever your belief system, worldview, political or religious affiliation, there will be something here that probably both offends and inspires you. Filled with some heavy thinking, from Noam Chomsky and Howard Bloom to Riane Eisler, Douglas Rushkoff and Peter Russell, but always in an accessible style (and with helpful footnotes, references, and a further reading list), the material ranges from media studies and alternative politics to science, history, environmental and feminist thought, magick, psychology and more.
The book also collects together countercultural and conspiratorial explorations by key writers, including Richard Metzger, RU Sirius, Kenn Thomas, Preston Peet, Nick Mamatas, Robert Sterling, Cletus Nelson, Mickey Z, David McGowan, and myself.
You may not agree with everything here, but after browsing through You Are Being Lied To, you'll "know" that the cosmos is a stranger place than you previously imagined it to be.
The Finest Collection of Truths, April 6, 2001
Reviewer: DR Gooding from Tennessee, USA
It's the finest collection of truths gathered in one binding. It's provided hope that I can overcome my own cultural brainwashing. To fear not the lies but question the facts and have faith in my own disbeliefs. It's recommended reading for anyone who isn't afraid to look beyond their own "programming" and to seek the world beyond lies. To look into the self-made shadows of humanity and discern the shapes and imagines that haunt us there. This is Editor Russ Kick's finest work!
