INTERNET NEWSBRIEF, January 29, 1999 Internet NewsBrief is a weekly service from the EPA Headquarters Library that provides a sampling of new and/or useful Internet resources for EPA staff and other environmental professionals. The Internet NewsBrief is also available on the Web at: http://www.epa.gov/natlibra/hqirc/inb.htm ** EPA INFORMATION ** NHEERL Internet Home Page http://www.epa.gov/nheerl/ The National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL), a research laboratory under the Office of Research and Development (ORD), is responsible for scientific research on the effects of contaminants and environmental stressors on human health. Much of this agency's research provides the basis for the formulation of environmental policies and programs. NHEERL's home page provides information on the agency's mission, goals, organizations, and research activities. The page's organization section includes links providing information on individual offices. ** GOVERNMENT INFORMATION ** The Combined Health Information Database (CHID) http://chid.nih.gov/ The Combined Health Information Database (CHID) is a database produced by agencies from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control. This database includes abstracts and availability information for consumer-oriented materials. Much of the materials listed are "fugitive materials" or materials that are not likely to be indexed elsewhere. The database covers 18 health related topics. Each topic represents a subfile or an individual database from one of the participating government agencies. Some of the topics covered are Alzheimer's disease, cancer prevention and control, deafness and communication disorders, diabetes, digestive diseases, epilepsy education and prevention, kidney and urologic diseases, medical genetics and rare disorders, prenatal smoking cessation, and oral health. The database provides the option of searching an individual topic or the entire database. National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/ncehhome.htm The National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) is affiliated with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). It attempts to provide national leadership in environmental public health. As part of this leadership, it produces scientific research and collaborates with state and local health departments, state and local environmental departments, federal agencies, research institutes, private foundations, international groups, and foreign governments. NCEH's web site includes access to a large number of publications. These publications include fact sheets, brochures, and books. Searchable indices are provided for scientific articles by NCEH authors and for MMWR articles. The site also has a programs and activities page that provides links to different programs and offices. ** INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ** Programme for the Promotion of Environmental Health (PEH), World Health Organization (WHO) http://www.who.int/peh/ The Programme for the Promotion of Environmental Health (PEH) is responsible for coordinating environmental health programs sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO). Its web site includes links to "Specific Programmes in Environmental Health." These "programmes" cover environmental health topics such as environmental health hazards, health risk assessment methodology, human resources development and capacity building, women and environmental health, radiation safety, environmental health in urban development, and water supply and sanitation in human settlements. Links are also included for environmental health newsletters, environmental health documents, WHO publications, environmental health facts and figures, and the Global Health and Environment Library Network (GELNET). ** BUSINESS/CORPORATE/NONPROFIT INFORMATION ** Health Effects Institute (HEI) http://www.healtheffects.org/ The Health Effects Institute (HEI) is an independent, nonprofit organization that is supported by the EPA and industry. This Institute studies the health effects of pollutants and other sources in the environment. Its web site includes access to HEI's Quarterly Newsletter, announcements, background information about HEI, research reports, requests for applications, program summaries, publications, and a directory of HEI's staff and board of directors.
