INTERNET NEWSBRIEF, January 8, 1999 Internet NewsBrief is a weekly service from the EPA Headquarters Library that provides a sampling of new and/or useful Internet resources for EPA staff and other environmental professionals. The Internet NewsBrief is also available on the Web at: http://www.epa.gov/natlibra/hqirc/inb.htm ** EPA INFORMATION ** Index of Watershed Indicators http://www.epa.gov/surf2/iwi/ The Index is a compilation of information on the "health" of aquatic resources in the United States. The Index looks at a variety of indicators that point to whether rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands and coastal areas are "well" or "ailing" and whether activities on the surrounding lands that affect our waters are placing them at risk. Enviromapper for Watersheds http://www.epa.gov/surf2/iwimapper/ This interactive mapping tool allows users to look at many geographical levels of environmental data. The mapper shows data at the national, state, and county levels from the Index of Watershed Indicators as layovers on the maps and incorporates GIS functionality, such as displaying multiple spatial layers, zooming, panning, identifying features, and querying single points. ** ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION ** SOURCE Water and Sanitation News http://www.wsscc.org/source/ SOURCE Water And Sanitation News Service is a joint endeavor of the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre. SOURCE Weekly brings you a weekly update of short news, while the bi-monthly SOURCE Bulletin gives more in-depth news from the WSSCC and IRC. Both are available on this site, or subscribe here to receive new issues by e-mail. ** ACADEMIC INFORMATION ** [WATCH THIS ONE - ONE OF THOSE SITES THAT DISABLES THE "BACK" KEY] Water Quality Web Resources http://deal.unl.edu/agnic/ Sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Excellence in Water Quality Program, this web site is designed to provide high quality web-based information to K-12 students, researchers, farmers, and others about the importance of water resources and water safety issues. This database was developed and is maintained by UNL Libraries as a part of the Agricultural Networked Information Center (AgNIC) project. Use the search form to find items by categories and by age group, or use the Category Maps to browse all the categories and their subcategories. This is a good starting point if you do not know exactly what you are looking for, or if you want to see all the categories in the database. If you cannot find the information you want, go to "Get Answers" to send a question on any water-related topic. ** GOVERNMENT INFORMATION ** Environmental Contaminants Encyclopedia http://www.aqd.nps.gov/toxic/index.html This online Encyclopedia summarizes environmental toxicology benchmarks and general information related to fish, wildlife, invertebrates, and other non-human living resources. The data focuses on low, typical and high environmental concentrations found throughout this country and the world; concentrations that are toxic to various organisms; and standards, criteria, and other benchmark values. Brief sections at the beginning of each entry give general overviews on the compound, its hazards, its more dangerous toxic effects (carcinogenic, developmental, reproductive, endocrine, genotoxic), and its environmental fate. Also included is important summary information (such as government grey literature and personal communications) that is otherwise difficult to find via searches of electronic or peer reviewed sources. ** INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ** International Office for Water http://www.oieau.fr/ The International Office for Water (IOW) is a non-profit organization building a network of public and private partners involved in water resources management and protection in France, Europe and the world. The site they have designed is available in French, English, Spanish, and Portuguese. To learn more about the organization and its upcoming projects, conferences, and other activities, read IOW's online bulletin, International News. Find the full-text of speeches and presentations delivered at such international conferences as the March 1998 Water and Sustainable Development Conference or browse catalogs of upcoming training workshops and conferences available in Europe. The section "EAUDOC plus", although mostly in French, offers bibliographic databases of articles and research papers, sources for scientific, economic and legal data, technical directories, and water information systems.
