Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: U.S. Census Database, 2000
Abstract:
This data set includes U.S. Census Bureau population information for the United States and Puerto Rico, presented by county. These data are from the 2000 Census and include total population counts, population density values, gender and age statistics, various statistics on race and ethnicity distributions, and population change between 1990 and 2000. This is a revised version of the August, 2002, data set, with additional data fields included.
Supplemental_Information:
To create maps that are similar to the maps in the National Atlas <http://nationalatlas.gov/natlas/natlasstart.asp>, ce2000t.dbf can be joined to the 2000 county boundaries available from the National Atlas download page, <http://nationalatlas.gov/atlasftp.html>.

For additional information on U.S. Census Bureau definitions and statistics, see the U.S. Census Bureau web page at: <http://www.census.gov/>.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: Apr-2002 (process 1 of 2)
All the census data sets were loaded into ArcView and joined into a single database file using the FIPS-code field. Fields for county name, State name abbreviation, State FIPS, and ratio of males to females were added. The final database was called ce2000t.dbf.

Data sources used in this process:

    • CEN2000_1
    • CEN2000_2
    • CEN2000_3
    • CEN2000_4

    • CEN2000_15
    • CEN2000_16

Data sources produced in this process:

    • ATLAS-CE2000

    Date: Jun-2004 (process 2 of 2)
Fields containing data for population change between 1990 and 2000, median age in 2000, and age over 65 for 2000 were extracted from DATABOOK. The percent of the population over 65 was computed. The resulting database containing the three new fields of data was appended to ATLAS_CE2000.

Data sources used in this process:

    • DATABOOK
    • ATLAS-CE2000
